If you’re in the market for an all-electric SUV, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is certainly an option worth entertaining. Ford’s compact crossover SUV is a combination of the automaker’s venerated pony car horsepower with a future-forward emissions-free powertrain. But what about the latest Mustang Mach-E’s range?
In this article, we’ll break down the Ford Mustang Mach-E’s range, trim levels, and other specs, while seeing how its electric motor stacks up against other electric cars — and if it’s worthy of that road trip you’ve been planning.
Mustang Mach-E Range by Trim
The 2022 Mustang Mach-E is available in four different trim variants, with each progressive trim adding to the standard features available in the base model Mustang Mach-E Select.
The Mustang Mach-E AWD system — one electric motor on the rear axle and a second one on the front axle — is a primary source of the car’s impressive acceleration capability. However, regardless of trim, the Mustang Mach-E’s range improves when you go with the RWD option. All trim levels of the Mach-E feature Ford’s Phone As Key technology and a front trunk.
Ford Mustang Mach-E Select
Manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP): $43,895
EPA-estimated miles of range: 247 miles (rear-wheel drive with standard-range battery)
The base model Mach-E Select’s 0-to-60 mph time of 5.2 seconds with electronic all-wheel drive is a true testament to the car’s performance pedigree. Like all the trims that follow it, the Mach-E select also comes with Ford’s new suite of safety features, dubbed Ford Co-Pilot360 2.0. It includes elements like blind-spot monitoring, a lane-keeping system, lane-centering assist, and speed sign recognition.
Ford Mustang Mach-E Premium
MSRP: $48,775
EPA-estimated miles of range: 303 miles (RWD with extended range battery)
Aluminum wheels and a couple of notable interior upgrades separate the Mach-E Premium. In addition to a fixed panoramic glass roof, the Premium trim also offers power-adjustable front passenger and driver seats covered in a smooth faux-leather fabric.
Ford Mustang Mach-E California Route 1
MSRP: $52,450
EPA-estimated miles of range: 314 miles (RWD with extended range battery)
Perks on the Mach-E California Route 1 trim include the vehicle’s highest available range — 314 miles when equipped with the extended battery and RWD. The California Route 1 edition also includes Ford’s BlueCruise semi-autonomous driver’s aid which helps the driver speed up, brake, and steer. Those into automatic assist will also appreciate this trim level’s Active Park Assist 2.0 which prompts the vehicle to park itself.
Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition
MSRP: $61,995
EPA-estimated miles of range: 270 miles (RWD with extended range battery)
The Mustang Mach-E AWD system — one electric motor on the rear axle and a second one on the front axle — is a primary source of the Mach-E Performance Edition’s impressive acceleration capability. It’s the only 2022 Mach-E available with all-wheel-drive capability. This trim also features machined-face aluminum wheels with black-painted pockets, meaning the wheels are bright silver with jet black hollows around the wheels that gives them a unique, sporty look, both when moving and stopped.
Mustang Mach-E Range vs. Competitors
The following chart illustrates how the Mustang Mach-E’s range stacks up against class-similar vehicles:
2022 Model | Max Range of Miles on Full Charge (Battery-Only) |
---|---|
Tesla Model Y | 330 |
BMW iX | 324 |
Rivian R1S | 316 |
Ford Mustang Mach-E | 303 |
Volkswagen ID.4 | 280 |
Hyundai KONA Electric | 258 |
The Mustang Mach-E range of 303 miles on a full charge (for the Premium trim) falls squarely in the middle of the pack against its class competition and is just 25 miles short of the class-leading Tesla Model Y, making the higher trims a great choice for electric car shoppers eager to get a lot of range from their new car.
But the lower Select trim’s 247 miles of range would drop the Mach-E down to the bottom of this list, below the Hyundai KONA Electric. Notably, the Mach-E Select costs almost $10,000 more than the Hyundai KONA Electric ($34,000 for the KONA Electric vs. $43,895 for the Mach-E Select) while having a lower range.
Other Features to Note
Now that you know the Mustang Mach-E’s range compared to other brands, you’d probably like to know a few more details about the car.
Passenger and Cargo Room
If the name “Mustang” conjures images of a tiny sports car, you’re probably wondering if the 2022 Mach-E will fit all your friends comfortably. Unlike a traditional Mustang, the Mach-E is a two-row SUV with seating for up to five passengers. Critics and drivers have lauded the car’s comfy contoured seats while praising its interior ample headroom for taller passengers.
The Mach-E’s 29.7 cubic feet of cargo room with all seats occupied is about average for its class, with that space expanding to an impressive 59.7 feet with the rear seats folded.
Battery and Charging
The Ford Mustang Mach-E comes with a choice between two lithium-ion batteries: Standard Range (68 kWh) and Extended Range (88 kWh) — both available with an RWD or AWD drivetrain.
The vehicle’s battery pack is secured inside a waterproof, crash-absorbing battery case on the floor between its two axles. Batteries that power the Ford Mustang Mach-E are liquid-cooled to optimize performance during extreme cold and extreme heat and to improve charging times.
The U.S. Department of Energy reports that the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E has a fuel economy of 99 MPGe city and 86 MPGe on the highway, giving it a combined fuel economy rating of 93 MPGe.
Each Mach-E comes standard with Ford Mobile Power Cord that can be utilized with a standard 120-volt home outlet or a larger 240-volt, most commonly used by large appliances such as washers and dryers. The car averages 3 miles per charging hour on a 120V and 20 miles per charging hour on a 240V outlet.
Who Is the Ford Mustang Mach-E Best For?
The Ford Mustang Mach-E falls in a strange area between a family-oriented SUV and a performance-oriented battery electric vehicle (BEV). While it has nearly as much range on a full charge as rivals like Tesla Model Y, it lacks the Model Y’s luxury styling and much of its ultra high-tech features.
While it’s hard to see how the speedster Mach-E GT Performance Edition would be practical for families, the ample cargo space and range of the lower trims make it more than a feasible option for folks looking for a peppy and stylish all-electric car.
Another thing to think about if you’re considering a 2022 Ford Mach-E is that as of this writing — due to both high demand and pandemic-related production delays — the current model year Ford Mustang Mach-E is no longer available for retail sale.
A limited remaining inventory may be available at selected dealerships nationwide. Make sure to contact the dealership first to make sure they have one available for a test drive.
